Donor Screening with The Logan Centre and LFC

When a prospective donor comes for her initial consultation at the centre they go through the screening process. This involves the following investigations:

- Psycho / Social background
- Medical History and Examination
- Ultrasound Examination
- Blood Screening

Psycho / Social Background

The Psychologist will look for:
- Any signs of drug/alcohol abuse;
- Any signs of mental disorders that may be genetically linked;
- Observe signs of emotional instability that may adversely affect the treatment (although this does not guarantee that the donor will decide not to go through the treatment or withdraw half way through);
- Ask for any family history of mental disorders;
- Examine social background of the donor and her educational status;
- Try to find out as much as possible whether the donor understands the implications of her donation and if not, explain it to her;
- Provide brief pre-HIV counselling;
- Explain the possibility of genetic problems being found from the blood tests and explain the implications.

Medical History and Examination

- The length and regularity of menstrual cycles
- Number of pregnancies and deliveries
- Previous operations or medical problems
