It is important to note right from the start that your donation may be quite time
consuming. Although we will do our best to always accommodate you and arrange
for local scans and blood tests, we cannot always arrange this and there will be a
certain number of times that you would need to come in to the Centre.

1. Registration: The first step is to fill out the attached registration
form and mail it back to us. If you have any further questions do
feel free to call our free phone on 0800 389 9147, Mondays to
Fridays 9.00 – 17.30.

2. Counselling & initial medical consultation: As soon as we receive
your registration form, we will call you to make an appointment to see
our internal counsellor where you will explore the issues connected
to this important decision. This session will last about 45 minutes.

On the same day you will have your
initial medical consultation where the doctor will outline the treatment and the procedures involved as well as perform the medical consultation and blood tests. You will be with the doctor for approximately an hour and half and you are welcome to bring a partner, friend or family member along with you. We do not ask you to make a decision on the day of this appointment, although you may do so if you wish. Alternatively, we will follow up your appointment after approx-imately 4 weeks to see whether you are still interested.
3. If you are sure that you would like to go ahead with the donation on the day of your
consultation, we can arrange for blood tests to be taken. You will be tested for HIV,
Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Cystic Fibrosis and we will do a chromosomal analysis.
You will also be tested for CMV (Cytomegalovirus), which is a virus that effects
approximately 80% of the population. This result would determine whether we will be
able to match you to a certain recipient.
4. We will then arrange for you to have a hormone test done between day 2 and day 6
of your menstrual cycle. This hormone test will give us an idea about your ovarian reserve
(i.e. the ability of your ovaries to respond to the medications and produce a good number
of eggs of good quality). If the level of your hormones is high (i.e. you have a relatively
diminished ovarian reserve for somebody of your age) you will be contacted by one of the
doctors to inform you of the results because we will be unable to proceed with egg donation
in this situation. You could either come into the clinic to have this done, or we can arrange
for the blood to be taken locally.
5. Matching: After you have reached your [final decision] to become a donor, you will be
matched up with a recipient couple. Your cycle will then be co-ordinated by our egg
donation team. You will be welcome to contact The Logan Centre at any times as we will
be organizing your treatment cycle.
6. The treatment cycle takes approximately 4 weeks and involves a series of injections,
which are self-administered, using an injection gun similar to the insulin gun used by
diabetics. The daily injections will last for between 10 to 14 days. If you do not feel
comfortable doing this on your own, you can either attend LFC or we can arrange for a
nurse to come to your home or workplace.
7. Scan: During the two-week course of injections you will need to have vaginal ultrasound
scans, once in the first week and about 3 times in the second. These scans will show us
how many eggs you are producing and also help to ensure you are on the correct dosage.
A donor will normally produce 5 to 15 eggs in one cycle.
8. .Egg collection: Once we are happy with the development of the eggs you will be booked
for egg collection. You will have an injection arranged between 21:00 & 24:00 in the evening.
The egg collection is done 36 hours after the injection under sedation and takes about
twenty minutes. On the day of the egg collection we do advise you to bring someone along
with you so that you are not travelling home by yourself. We strongly advise that you take
extra contraceptive precautions during intercourse throughout the entire egg donation cycle
and until you have a period as there is an increased risk of pregnancy at this time.
Counselling
As a policy of the centre you are required to see one of our in-house counsellors for a
consultation before we start any treatment. Should you wish to see a counsellor on
completion of your treatment, please feel free to call us to arrange an appointment.
